Alumina pairing in total hip replacement.

چکیده
Many pioneers from around the world followed this initial experience but long-term results and good methodology were lacking. Recently, a number of reports 4-6 have focused attention again on an alumina-on-alumina combination. More than 30 years after its introduction into clinical practice, this article considers the current information on the alumina-on-alumina combination from both experimental and clinical standpoints.

Alumina ceramic-on-ceramic total hip replacement with a layered acetabular component.
A modular layered acetabular component (metal-polyethylene-ceramic) was developed in Japan for use in alumina ceramic-on-ceramic total hip replacement. Between May 1999 and July 2000, we performed 35 alumina ceramic-on-ceramic total hip replacements in 30 consecutive patients, using this layered component and evaluated the clinical and radiological results over a mean follow-up of 5.8 years (5 ...
متن کامل2.1 Biocompatibility of Alumina-Ceramic in Total Hip Replacement. Macroscopic- and Microscopic Findings on Capsular Tissues after Long-term Implantation
Clinically the low wear of self-pairing aluminaceramic type BIOLOX (Feldmühle/CERASIV) in the self-locking AUTOPHOR and cemented XENOPHOR prosthesis (Osteo AG) was confirmed radiographically after 10 years (29) and recently after 20 years (33) of clinical experience. In laboratory measurements of retrieved prostheses (chiefly after infection or aseptic loosening) the low wear rate of ceramic se...
متن کاملAlumina-on-alumina total hip replacement for femoral neck fracture in healthy patients
BACKGROUND Total hip replacement is considered the best option for treatment of displaced intracapsular fractures of the femoral neck (FFN). The size of the femoral head is an important factor that influences the outcome of a total hip arthroplasty (THA): implants with a 28 mm femoral head are more prone to dislocate than implants with a 32 mm head. Obviously, a large head coupled to a polyethy...
متن کاملChanges in the bone mineral density in the acetabulum and proximal femur after cementless total hip replacement: alumina-on-alumina versus alumina-on-polyethylene articulation.
Our aim in this prospective study was to compare the bone mineral density (BMD) around cementless acetabular and femoral components which were identical in geometry and had the same alumina modular femoral head, but differed in regard to the material of the acetabular liners (alumina ceramic or polyethylene) in 50 patients (100 hips) who had undergone bilateral simultaneous primary total hip re...
متن کاملCrack growth resistance of alumina, zirconia and zirconia toughened alumina ceramics for joint prostheses.
Mono-phase bio-ceramics (alumina and zirconia) are widely used as femoral heads in total hip replacements (THR) as an alternative to metal devices. Unfortunately, the orthopaedic community reports significant in-vivo failures. Material scientists are already familiar with composites like alumina zirconia. Since both are biocompatible, this could prove to be a new approach to implants. This pape...
